145. Except in special circumstances officers must give nine months' notice of their intention to apply for long leave. In the case of senior officers the notice must be given (1) or transmitted (2) to the Colonial Secretary. In the case of subordinate officers notice to the Head of Department will suffice unless acting arrangements requiring the approval of Government are involved, when the application must be transmitted to the Colonial Secretary.
146. Leave cannot be claimed by an officer transferred to Hong Kong on account of his service under the Crown in another Colony or Protectorate but such service may be taken into consideration in determining the leave which may be granted to him.
147. When an officer receives, in addition to the salary of his appointment, an allowance granted to himself personally, and not permanently attached to his office, he may, when absent on half pay leave, draw only half of such personal allowance, the remaining moiety being left undrawn and lapsing to the Colonial Treasury. The undrawn moiety of the increments of salary of the absent officer will similarly lapse.
148. Subject to the provisions of General Order 109 (12) relating to quarters and General Order 156 relating to study leave an officer on leave is not eligible for transport, travelling or house allowance.
(i) Sick Leave.
Note.-General Orders 149-154 do not apply to the subordinate The sick staff of the Police and Prison departments. leave of these officers is governed by special regulations under the Police Force Ordinance, 1900, and the Prisons Ordinance, 1899.
149.-(1) For the purposes of this General Order the term “sick an officer is leave" means any period or periods during which permitted, on account of illness, to be absent from duty on full pay and without forfeiting leave of any other description.
(2) Sick leave up to a maximum of 28 days in any numerical year may be granted to a Head of Department by the Colonial Secretary and to any other officer by the Head of his Department provided the necessity for such leave is certified by a Medical Officer. Provided further that the officer in whose discretion the grant of such leave les may nccept the certificate of any registered medical practitioner or where the probable period of absence does not exceed two days, may dispense altogether with such certificate.
(3.) The certificate should specify the probable time during which the officer will be absent from duty, and at the end of such time, in the event of the officer's continued inability through illness to. perform the duties of his office, a further certificate will be required.

(4.) The certificate should be sent to the Colonial Secretary in the case of a Head of Department, and in the case of any other officer to ne Head of his Department. In the latter case the sick leave need not be reported to Government otherwise than in the monthly return, unless there is reason to think that the illness will result in absence beyond the allowance of 28 days mentioned in paragraph (2) when the case should be submitted for consideration under the succeeding rules.
(5.) In the case of prolonged illness or serious accident confining the officer to house or hospital for a period exceeding the allowance in paragraph (2 the Governor may permit the whole or any portion of the excess to be treated as sick leave.
150.--(1.) When an officer is certified by a Medical Officer to be convalescent after sny exhausting illness or severe operation or after having suffered a serious accident, and to require for his convalescence a period of absence from duty, he may with the approval of the Governor, be granted convalescent leave for any period not exceeding ten days.
(2.) In special cases convalescent leave may with the approval of the Governor be granted for any period not exceeding two weeks.
(3.) Convalescent leave shall not be granted more than once in any numerical year and for the purpose of record shall be treated as sick leave.
151. If upon the termination of such sick leave and convalescent leave (if any) as may be granted to him an officer is certified by a Medical Officer to be still unable to resume duty he may be granted leave of any description for which he may be eligible.
152. All sick leave and convalescent leave granted under these rules, including that granted to Heads of Departments and all resumptions of duty after such leave inust be entered in monthly returns in accordance with General Order 203.
153. Without the special permission of the Governor an officer on sick leave is not at liberty to leave the Colony.
154. The Governor may require an officer to obtain a medical certificate of fitness before returning to duty.
(i) Study Leave*.
155. With the approval of the Governor extensions of leave (study leave) may be granted in accordance with the following rules to officers who undertake approved courses of study during home leave:--
